Photographs taken and collected by Hans Niklas, a Portland, Or. resident and owner of the florist business, Niklas & Sons. Niklas was a member of the Portland Social Turn Verein, a chapter of the German-based organization focused on gymnastic and physical exercise and the development of physical and mental potential, and most of the photographs document the club's activities. One photograph album contains photos of the club's trips to Turnfests in Los Angeles, Denver, and Chicago in 1911 and 1913, as well as club outings to Lake Oswego and Oak Grove, Or. There are also photographs taken by Niklas of his flower gardens, shop, and employees, as well as mountain and forest scenery, views of Portland, and photos of Portland Rose Festival and Elks parades.
